  • Organise texts. Using a range of appropriate structures.
  • Show an increasing understanding of how to shape texts for different purposes and audiences.

Describe It - Camp Experiences

Learning goals:
  • To ‘Show, Don’t Tell’ the reader by painting a picture with words.
  • A variety of sentence starters
  • A variety of sentence lengths
  • Edit and rework
  • Effective peer checking and feedback

As the parent helper puts the uncomfortable harness on a shaky body, you can hear the wind blowing the tall and strong trees. Everyone felt anxious about what could happen like if a tree snaps or if the rope rips and someone falls down to their death. Then the instructor called someone up. Their legs were so shaky they couldn't even walk properly. Then he told the person to climb up a ladder, you could tell that it was hard for them because they were really nervous.

Then the instructor told the tired children to run to level 2, so they did. As they ran, you could tell they were huffing and puffing. Then when they had ran to the correct distance, there was a snap! The person was screaming the whole time, because they were going extremely fast.

Student Reflection:
In my writing, my goal is to use different sentence types - Simple Compound and complex.
I did show this goal here because I put in two complex sentences and I put in quite a few compound sentences.

In my writing, one of my goals is to use different sentence beginnings and lengths.
I did not show this goal here because I used the word then at the start of a lot of sentences.

My next step is to support main ideas with details that fit.

Teacher Comment: Boston, you are able to idenitfy and use
a variety of sentence types in your writing. Sometimes, depending on the type
of writing you are doing, it is okay to repeat sentence starters for impact.
However, be mindful if you are doing this often as in longer stories, it can
disengage the reader.

Maths Goal: Add and subtract integers

     GOAL: Add and subtract integers. Eg 6.4 - 7.2 = -0.6. L4.

Medal: I think I did really well with adding negative numbers because it feels like subtracting positive numbers which should be easy for me.
Medal: Another thing I did well was adding and subtracting positive numbers because I learnt how to do that in year 1 and 2.
Backpack: Next time I need to work on subtracting a negative number with a positive number because I get mixed up sometimes.

Here is a picture of me working on my goal

Cross Country Reflection

Cross Country Reflection

1. How did your Cross Country training go?

I went great  because I improved by going at my own pace, and when Milan over lapped me I didn't speed up to over take him, although he was one meter in front of me, and I didn't get mad when it happened. I
was going at my own pace trying to do the best I could.

2.  Did you improve your lap number? Why? Why not?

Yes I improved my lap number because I didn't worry about anybody else, like when Milan rolled his ankle when
he was running. Also, I didn't worry about Holy G when she was tying her shoe laces and it didn't look like she needed help.

3. What value did you show on Friday at Cross Country? How?

I showed brave because I don't really run but I still gave it a go, like when I practised at morning tea with Milan,
Logan and Eli to get better and keep my confidence up. I also did some swimming to keep my fitness
up as well.

4. Who else did you notice showing one of our school values (they could be from another class or syndicate)? How?
Sam showed connect because he was cheering on everyone even if he wasn't friends with them, and always gave
them a positive comment. Also Kaden Wilson showed connect because he was pushing me to my limits to go faster.

First Two Activities At Camp
It was day two at camp and I was expecting an entertaining one.For breakfast I had peaches and  yogurt. The teachers said to have a huge breakfast because we were going to have a fun but tiring day. They also said that we are doing these activities for the day. The first activity we did was a Burma trail, I was terrified but when I nearly finished it I wanted to do it again. While I was doing the Burma trail, I got a Putere Positive because I was helping Troy when he was blind folded. The second activity was Recreation. For recreation time, I went on a Monorail that the camp had, it was cool because you could see Lyttelton Harbour and at the same time you would going extremely fast. The other thing I did was Rugby Pool. Rugby Pool is when you have three red balls and a white one, your opponent has the same. Then you get your white ball and roll it and knock off all three balls that the other person has. I am really lucky because I have got three more activities to go.

Maths Knowledge/Strategy Reflection

Maths Knowledge/Strategy Reflection

What was the strategy/knowledge that you were learning?
The strategy/knowledge I used was adding and subtracting in place value.

How well did you use the strategy/knowledge? Give an example
I used the strategy well because I knew what number to break up. For example, the question is
963+473=, you break the lowest number which is 473.

What challenges/ mistakes helped you with this new strategy/knowledge?
The challenge/mistake I made was when I broke up the bigger number so it was harder to answer
the question.

This helped me because now I know to break up the lower number which is easier.

Giving Quality Feedback

GIVING QUALITY FEEDBACK

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO COMMENT ON PEOPLES BLOGS?
It is important because people can improve when they do another blog post.
What is the FIRST step in giving feedback? The first step is to tell the blogger something you like for example I like how much detail you have.

Why is it important to follow this step (in green)? It is important to follow this step because you need to give the blogger some confidence so he/she can keep blogging and feel happy.

Do I have to use this every time? Yes I do.

What are the SECOND two options in giving feedback (both in orange)? The two options in orange is to ask the blogger a question and the second option was to give the blogger a positive suggestion, for example next time you should add more detail.

Why is it important to follow these steps? It is important to follow these steps because the blogger could improve in there learning.

Do I have to do both? No, I must choose between asking a question or giving the blogger a positive
suggestion.

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO GIVE QUALITY FEEDBACK? It is important to give quality feedback
because you could make the blogger improve their quality in their posts and they could learn more
from your feedback.

Sharp Reading - Using "I think that means"

When using the “I think that means” strategy, what do you have to do? Give two answers.
When you use this strategy you have to put the sentence in your own words. You also have to convince your audience that you know what the sentence means.

Write an “ITTM” for the following sentences:

It was a bright summer's morning and Lou had just finished milking the cow.
I think that means that it was a nice morning and a girl just completed taking produce out of a cow.

Lou stood in the middle of the room with a huge smile on her face.

I think that means that the girl was in the centre of a space with a grin on her head.
